Noble Presets | An Updated Review on the Noble Signature Preset

One of my most popular posts on my website was my first review of the Noble Signature presets. I wanted to check back in to share that, yes, I am still using the signature preset. I am a film and digital wedding and newborn photographer based in upstate NY. I use the Noble Signature preset to help match my film scans from Richard Photo Lab. I find that the preset works best with Fuji 400h, but I also use it to match Portra 400 with a bit more tweaking.

I first wanted to set some expectations and share a few tips to help get the best result when using this preset. So here we go:

  • You first need to understand what good light is and how to properly expose your images. I always use open shade, window light and backlight with a reflective surface to light my subjects.

  • Know what reflective surfaces are and how they impact skin tones. For example, if you are shooting a subject on bright green grass, you will get a color cast of green on their skin tones. I shoot primarily in the Northeast where we have a lot of rain and very green grass. I often have to add quite a bit of magenta to my images to balance out the greens if I can’t find a neutral reflective surface.

  • No preset will be a one click wonder. I often make tweaks to white balance, tone and clarity. I also love using the Noble enhancers. My favorites are 7a Greens Natural and 16 Reception Flash. When I am shooting Portra film I do have to make some modifications to a few color sliders, but I have that saved as a preset to make it fast.

  • I recommend slightly underexposing. Bringing up shadows is easier than trying to save the highlights.

  • I personally use Auto White Balance for my camera.

  • If you are editing against film images, I recommend using the reference view in Lightroom. This allows you to have an anchor reference image to edit against.

One of the most frequent questions in my last post was to see some SOOC images. I am back to share some more recent work and compare them to my film images.
